The biggest game of Coventry City's season so far
YOU don't need me to tell you that Saturday's highly anticipated clash with Nottingham Forest is a so-called "six pointer". You should be able to see that for yourself, and if you can't, you're just not looking hard enough.
It'd certainly be quite handy (or were we to lose, quite disastrous) if the powers that be at The Football League took the controversial step to actually go ahead and award six points to the victor at The City Ground, given that that is in fact the number of points we require to finally claw our way out of the drop zone; a place that we've begrudgingly inhabited for what seems like an eternity.
I'm ashamed to say that I had convinced myself that we were all but condemned to League 1 football next season following the inevitable defeat at Reading, however with Portsmouth's impending ten point reduction and three points stolen from Leeds in the most dramatic of fashions, Coventry City can't be written off just yet.
For once, City were fortunate enough to be able to capitalise on the shortcomings of their relegation rivals after so often failing to do so. Losses for Forest, Doncaster and Portsmouth coupled with draws for Milwall and Bristol City made Tuesday's victory all the more crucial.
With standard Sky Blue protocol seemingly turned on its head following McSheffrey's last minute penalty, who's to say that we can't go and grab that elusive away win at Forest?
And should that be the case, who knows where the momentum could take us? Granted, the sensible answer is probably "back down to the bottom of the table", but getting carried away after an unlikely victory is far more enjoyable than keeping a level head.
With a formidable Sky Blue contingent likely to make the trip to Nottingham, the atmosphere promises to be electric. One has to commend the admirable efforts of Coventry's travelling fans this season; always putting in a great vocal shift despite rarely witnessing anything like the desired result.
You can guarantee it'll be business as usual for the Sky Blue Army come Saturday; relegation six pointers being nothing out of the ordinary for the hardened Coventry City fan.
If years of supporting the Sky Blues have taught us anything, surely it's this:
The great escape is on.
