Why Coventry City fans must keep the faith

WILL there come a point this season when Coventry City fans must accept the fact that their team will be relegated?

A heady mixture of optimism and delusion will no doubt lead me to keep believing until our fate has been all but sealed by the forces of mathematics. Despite numerous friends having the bare faced cheek to tell me that our destiny is already decided, and that the Sky Blues are condemned to a sensational fall from the second tier of English Football, I remain confident about our chances.

I find it impossible to tell whether my insistence that Coventry City will in fact avoid the drop is borne out of bias. Although I would generally consider myself to be a very level-headed individual, there's a strong likelihood that my prediction is the result of some degree of blind faith.

Had we been comprehensively outplayed in the majority of our games this season then perhaps it would be a different story, but we haven't. There have clearly been occasions where the team simply hasn't turned up, but all in all I don't believe we've been turning in relegation performances.

Over the past few weeks we've gone toe to toe with the league's big dogs and given them a serious run for their money.

But for a thirty minute lapse in concentration against Southampton and two hideously unlucky goals against West Ham we could be sitting cosily outside the relegation zone, albeit still precariously perched for re-entry.

I often worry that all the pieces of the relegation jigsaw have been in place right from the word go this season. A deadly cocktail of managerial inexperience, backroom turmoil and the failure to retain key players definitely spells trouble; however the detrimental effects of these factors have arguably been fairly muted when you consider just how much worse things could be.

One thing is for sure; to beat the drop we will need to see significant improvements in our home form.

It's important to distinguish between form and performances, because by all accounts the team has actually played relatively well at The Ricoh this season. However, as promising as that may be, it counts for nothing when it's not reflected in the score line.

I'm sure it will come as no surprise to hear that I still whole heartedly believe the Sky Blues will avoid the drop this season. Isn't that what supporting Coventry City is all about?

I am an exile Sky Blue having lived down south since 1971 and having watched them against Southampton recently and considering yesterdays result at Pompey and Doncaster winning, things look very gloomy and the current players seem to get very downhearted very quickly, a severe lack of motivation
