The sunny optimism of Andy Thorn

IT continues to be a grim business being a Coventry City fan but it seems however many difficulties hit home Andy Thorn is a determined optimist

Well if he can't stay optimistic how can he expect the players to. On the face of it he has a job on his hands in his first managerial appointment

Personally at the time of year when a football fan should be an optimist I'm finding it hard to get there

Andy may be looking forward to the pre season friendlies but our squad is so thin I wonder if we can risk getting any injuries

Gary Deegan is going to have a great season and prove he's better than Aron Gunnarson he tells us in yesterday's Telegraph. Clearly a bit of Thorn optimism is rubbing off

I believe there's more to come from Deegan but in my opinion he doesn't measure up to the Icelander who is another big loss to the squad

Deegan will doubtless feature heavily though because as far as I can see we have four midfielder players plus Carl Baker and that's it. Let's pray for a lack of injuries even though both Clingan and Deegan suffered them last season.

There's always Conor Thomas though a few injuries and he'll be running midfield. Of course automatic choices have no need to maintain high performance levels and that's the problem

Andy Thorn released three midfielders a left back and a keeper presumably on being leant on to reduce the wage bill. We've lost three other players too and not replaced an outfield player with new personnel

Those bookies who have us marked down for a grim season might be not to far off the mark. Thorn has to try and keep the players positive which is no easy task

Gary Hoffman walked out of the door saying SISU dont have a long term plan and it seems as true now as it was then

The borrowing on future receipts seems a bit like the desperate penniless worker asking for an advance on his wages. The "club is not for sale" mantra just makes people ask why not.

Living from hand to mouth and working a way through the next disaster is hardly a strategy. Hoffman is playing the media to get the fans onside but it seems it's at least a medium term strategy

He can't have expected SISU to take his offer at this stage though they may given time decide to cut their losses

Weekly reminders that they are not wanted by the fans could only hope. Meanwhile we're left with the optimism of Mr Thorn

When we play moneybags Leicester we'll need all the optimism we can muster. Like the man says lets not lie down for anyone
