Goodbye Keiren Westwood

TO no Coventry City fan's surprise Keiren Westwood has finally left the club

When he joined I for one thought "Keiren who". It's a tribute to the judgement of the current manager that he leaves an International player and in many peoples eyes the best goalkeeper in the Championship

There will be those who claim he was over rated. I'm not among them. He showed exceptional ability as a shot stopper and certainly commanded his area. Most of all he had the ability to provide confidence to the defenders around him. He also could intimidate forwards so rarely lost out in one on ones

That said in the last six months of his contract he tended to concede too many long range goals. How much he was distracted by the pantomime that his contract negotiations became I don't know

But when you look at how close we came to relegation in the time he was at the club, and how many points he saved in games we owed him a lot

I was a big fan of Aidy Boothroyd's possibly the only one left. But I felt his attempts to strong arm Westwood were misjudged

Though I'm sure Westwood is being paid very handsomely by Sunderland I also feel prospects for his career played a part in his decision

He always seemed to have demanding standards and was impatient with those around him who didn't share them

It may well be that Aron Gunnarson will follow him out of the club. I share other fans views that we must accept these events and move on

But over ten years after relegation it worth reflecting that Coventry City's status in the game has reached a stage where quality players look elsewhere for thier future prospects

Keep up to date
