Right performance, wrong result

AS Richard Wood's header nestled into the bottom corner, the feeling of ecstasy that accompanied it was somewhat overshadowed by a crippling fear for the safety of the two goal lead that we'd just acquired.

I replied to multiple (premature) congratulatory texts expressing my awareness of the inevitability of our demise. I would love to say that correctly predicting the outcome of the game softened the blow, but I would be lying.

They say a one goal lead is dangerous, but for the Sky Blues it would appear that at least a seven goal cushion is required if one wishes to avoid the infamous "squeaky bum time".

I would've been extremely downbeat following the full time whistle were it not for the fantastic game that I'd witnessed.

I personally tend to find that the enjoyment of watching a match is generally outweighed by the tremendous stress that City enjoy dishing out to their supporters.

However, for one reason or another, that was not the case today.

Right from the off, the signs were promising.

Although Westwood wonder-saves tend to suggest that we'll spend the majority of the game under the cosh, we retaliated to Birmingham's early efforts with some cheeky attempts of our own.

King's goal was well deserved, and I feel that he put in one of the best attacking performances I've seen in a very long time.

I lost count of the number of times he picked the ball out of the air with consummate ease, holding and distributing perfectly on almost every occasion, much like he did against QPR last week.

Carl Baker and Martin Cranie also impressed, and it's a shame that the result detracts from their plaudits to a certain degree.

I'm not sure whether it's my constant desire to possess a pleasant disposition that's making me see today as a positive step on our way to getting out of this grim lull in form, and I look forward to seeing the reaction of other members of the Sky Blue faithful, allowing me to hopefully deduce that I am in fact not deluded.

So yet again it's unfortunately a case of "right performance, wrong result", but we can draw satisfaction from the fact that the fans are yet to man panic stations.

Perhaps next week we'll be back to the "wrong performance, right result" style that arguably saw us rocket up the table back in October, although ideally we'll soon be putting in the right performances and earning the right results.

well beaten by brum reserves and overrun in the second half. well at least boothroyd is not disturbed by it even though he is the only one who isn't! This team cannot perform for 90 mins. With players like Platt who is as useful as a sack of potatoes and McSheffrey who looks washed out this team are not up to snuff.
Westwood is about to depart and the only thing we fans have to look forward to is a relegation scrap. The sooner Boothroyd goes back to Div2 the better.

I certainly can't see how a Birmingham side with the likes of Hleb, Bentley, Ridgewell and Zigic can be classed as "Brum Reserves".

And as for the claim that we were over-run in the second half, I think the last ten minutes, in which we peppered their box with crosses from both wings, showed that we were more than capable of competing right to the end of the ninety.

The suggestion that we'll be in a "Relegation Scrap" is just ludicrous, and the idea that Boothroyd should leave isn't even worth entertaining.
