Coventry City playing to their full potential?
Aidy Boothroyd constantly states we are a work in progress and that we have not played to our full potential. Yet with our current team, I believe we are.
If you look at the side we put out Saturday, you a have a lot of hard working midfield players. Neither Carsley or Doyle are play makers or renowned for their passing ability. They do what they do best which is to break up the play, stop the opposition from playing and protect the back four.
The other midfield players McSheffrey (a former striker) and Gunnar (a central midfield player) work hard but both like to tuck in. This gives us no width when we attack. Consequently our only option is to go long from front to back and try and pick up the pieces from knock downs flicks etc.
With these players we are never going to dominate a game as we can't keep the ball for long periods or play a pass and move game through midfield.
How many crosses have we got in from the by line recently?
Our only creative players Bell a natural wide player and Clingan our best passer are both out or are returning from long term injury. Until these are back it will be more of the same.
Don't get me wrong but you can only play the players you have and have to design a system that suits them.
That is exactly what Boothroyd has done to good effect with the team. We are playing to our strengths which is direct, not pleasing on the eye but has so far been very effective.
Boothroyd will never admit that we are reaching our full potential as to do so would mean that there is no room for improvement. But without the return of Clingan and Bell or some new ball playing midfielders, I believe we are playing to our full potential.
