Coventry City the kings of " winning ugly"
LEAVING the Ricoh last Saturday I felt mixed emotions. While I was delighted we managed to take three points from the game I was deflated because for the second home game in a row we were far from great
There's a lot to be said for Winning Ugly but while we enjoy that it's worth thinking how we can improve and be the team we're capable of being
In fairness with his after match comments it's clear Aidy realises that as much as anybody. He referred to a lot of hard work being needed in training. It's that thorough approach that makes me hopeful improved performances will come in the weeks that follow
It's worth wondering what would have happened if Westwood hadn't saved that first half penalty
I believe we are still a team who's confidence is quite fragile. After a fairly even first half our performance tailed off badly in the second. The key is converting pressure into goals and that's why I believe getting the right combination upfront is vital
Clive Platt has been a better player for the club than any of us imagined. But it's becoming clearer in my opinion that he shouldn't be a consistent first choice at this level
Firstly he distorts our way of playing so we too easily resort to the long ball. Also against better Centre Halves he simply isn't as effective
We are beginning to see just how good a player Marlon King is and clearly he's an essential choice in his role
The striker who can be equally prolific and certainly is as skilful is Freddy Eastwood. I don't agree with those who say Freddy can't fit into the Boothroyd direct style
His two goals against Portsmouth on opening day show he fits into it well. I also don't believe a King,Eastwood combination wouldn't work
Both have the skill to drop off defences and unsettle them creating chances for each other. Both believe in shooting early and could create chances for midfielders backing up
Both aren't great in the air but are able to get on the end of good crosses. This surely should be a winning forward combination
With McSheffrey also availiable its to be hoped playing regularly together the'll create the goals that will take the pressure of the rest of the team. And maybe desperate defending of 1-0 leads wont be needed so much
Whilst I agreed with Aidy in those positions we should be cautious about throwing men forward in the closing minutes I wasn't pleased with our approach in the final minutes on Saturday
Blatant time wasting through possession football for as much as six minutes seemed a bit much to me. I suppose that was a definition of "winning ugly "

Fair comments Kev,I thought Boro on Saturday were the better team on the day, they knocked it around on the ground while we often reverted to the boring long ball route. They never looked like a team at the bottom of the table, but once again we rode our luck, and huffed and puffed our way to three points. I still think we are a fair way off being where Aidy wants us to be,but it's nice to see us at the top end of the table even when we aren't playing that well.So onwards and upwards, and hopefully Aidy will be able to strengthen the squad in January, because we do need it.
