Can Coventry City go the distance?

LIKE Nick Clegg in a student union bar, to me, Coventry City do not seem totally at home whilst occupying the play-off positions.

That is not to say we don't deserve our place in the upper reaches of the table. Oh no.

It's just that, after years of mediocrity, our recent transformation into a team now displaying consistency, a concept that has been totally alien to Sky Blue sides of yester year, has all been a bit sudden.

Week after week I expect us to tumble out of the play-offs, continuing our descent until we reach much more familiar territory; mid table. I put this down to the fact that I, as a relatively young Coventry fan, am simply not used to success, and to me, the last few months can without doubt be classed as successful.

The question on my mind now is whether we're capable of going the distance; will Coventry City be there or thereabouts come May?

The signs look fairly promising at present.

With a lot of our points coming off the back of what can definitely be considered sub-par performances, you'd think that sooner or later we'll start grabbing victories in style as opposed to "winning ugly".

Add to that the fact that up to now, we have had fairly rotten luck in the injury department, and the outlook for the remainder of the season looks all the more promising.

Having gone the whole season without deploying a recognised left-back, it's pretty impressive that we've managed to amass such an admirable points tally. And with the return to fitness of Stephen O'Halloran drawing nearer, it would appear that our already sturdy looking defence can only improve as the season goes on.

With a decent sized squad at his disposal, Boothroyd has done well to keep everyone happy even when they're not in the team. He often emphasises the fact that no player is ever far from getting in the starting eleven, and a case in point has to be Michael Doyle, who has come in and performed well over the last month.

One can also look at McSheffrey, who was cast to the bench for a few weeks, only to regain his place and repay the manager's faith with goals-a-plenty. Nathan Cameron and James McPake have also come back into the team in recent weeks having been overlooked in games gone by.

Without wanting to get ahead of myself, I'm already anticipating our final game of the season, an away trip to Carrow Road, to be quite the spectacle.
