Great performances against Coventry City down the years
KEVIN HALLS as ever gives food for thought with his blogs. I always find it's easier to appreciate great football performances if you're watching games as a neutral.
However like him I've seen some great performances by opposition players that often shined through the dissapointment of a City defeat
In the nineties through the Channel four coverage I loved to watch Italian football on Sunday afternoon I've continued to follow it since.
As a result I loved the period when players I admired in Italy came to play in England
I recall a number of great performances by Gianfranco Zola at Highfield Road when he played for Chelsea. Paolo Di Canio once helped West Ham give us a bit of a pasting
These two were very skilfull players and expressed a great love and joy for the game in the way they played it. Often you are concentrating on your own team and don't always appreciate the opposition. But some performances are that good they stand out
There not always foreign players though. We had many great tussles with Manchester United for example.
I recall a fine midfield preformance from David Beckham in the days when he was a pure footballer rather than a celebrity. Another young player who often caught my eye in performances against City was Joe Cole in his West Ham days
It's not always appreciated that greats like Gerd Muller and Franz Beckanbaeur played against City in our one european venture in the seventies
But the one player in that era that truly gave exceptional performances against Coventry City was the genius that was George Best

« Every decade has had great players and teams | My dimishing respect for Keiren Westwood »

I thought I'd write about something other than King or Westwood Kev,because we all want that resolved now don't we ?
I was impressed reading about Phyllis Pyle the other day,she is a real fan !
We all have seen great players and teams play us over the years, and some stick in the mind, but that's not to say the Sky Blues haven't entertained us as well because we have always done well against top opposition, the better the rival the better we seem to perform.
As for Best I saw him three times play against us,and I have to say who ever was defending him did a good job because he was kept out of the games.
But he was still a brilliant player, and wouldn't we like someone like him in our team now !
