Coventry City and moral judgements
AIDY BOOTHROYD'S charm offensive with City fans has so far worked well. However it's clear he will alienate some fans afresh if he pursues an interest in Marlon King
I believe he's right to resist the media's desire for him to attack a player he had a constructive working relationship with. Also I suspect his wish to be of help to King in the future may well be on a personal basis, rather than the offer of a future playing contract
But off course while it's known we are looking for a prolific goalscorer the connection is bound to be made
So should we be prepared to offer him a contract ?
Like most fans my instant reaction was NO. I have female relations and friends and I react with horror at the thought of any man who hits a woman.
There is a moral issue of whether we as individuals can offer alliegence to someone who does that. Against that there's the moral principle that when someone pays the price for thier actions, they should be given the chance to start again
Clearly accepting he's done wrong is key to this. And perhaps putting something back through work of a charitable nature.
I believe this isn't a clean cut issue. Those who say they wont support a City team with him in it have a right to thier reaction but are denying the possibility of prison changing people
Those who say it doesnt matter arent been realistic. We need players we are proud of in Coventry City its always been a family club. So penitence is the key
Certainly such behaviour as we've seen from Marlon King in the past should not be tolerated in the future if he does wear City colours.
I thought the club acted honourably and morally in ending Kevin Thornton's contract. It was the culmination of a lot of trouble during the time he was under contract to the club.
Football is very tribal and often morality is left behind where judgements are concerned by club and fan alike.
I was struck by the sight of female Chelsea fans supporting John Terry when he'd behaved less than decently to thier gender in his private life recently
But for me morality does matter and I'm conflicted by the Marlon King case. As i said earlier I suspect Aidy is looking elsewhere for his X factor striker
In some ways It would be for the best If he did

Interesting blog kev, I can see where your coming from on this, Marlon King has been a good goalscorer over the years, but off the field he has been a lot of trouble. Boothroyd says he can handle him, and has done in the past,so we may have to take his word on this.
We do need a top class striker, so we may just have to accept King if he comes, and as we both know by now us fans are fickle, and if he did the business on a regular basis we would forget all about his past, or at least put it away till he moves on !
That addresses seevarl of my concerns actually.
