Towards a new Coventry City squad

AIDY BOOTHROYD has began reshaping the City squad in the last few days. He continued his charm offensive with the City fans by bringing Garry McSheffrey back to the club

I know that's a move that some fans have questioned but I for one think it's a positive one. We are faced with a need to build a squad on not vast resources and this is a good start

We have another option on the left side of midfield if needed and an addition to the strike force. Four years on he won't be the player that he was perhaps. However like Boothroyd said he brings experience gained in that time back with him

I am sure given some of his injury history the fans will not expect miracles. With the contract being a year plus an option both parties can see if it works

I don't share the romantic idea that because he's a Coventry kid he is directly preferable to anyone else in the position. Looking at his playing history whatever his background I believe he's an exciting addition to the squad

We shouldn't underestimate the message being sent out here either. His sale to Birmingham was a symbol of Coventry City being a club that would sell its assets. Now we have one back at no cost

In the past we've also regularly sold to Aston Villa. The news today that we've recruited from them one of thier young players is most welcome. I admit to not being familiar with Stephen O'Hallaran but now we have two young left backs in competition

On a personal note I would admit to a sense of relief that the Marlon King rumours seem unfounded. Papers will always link us with players from Aidy's past. I think there are moral questions about such a deal.

The way the club acted over Kevin Thornton certainly made me think these questions would be explored thoroughly and rightly so but it would seem its just paper talk

Finally I believe it's essential next years squad includes Kieren Westwood. Lets do our utmost to show that these days we do hang on to our valued assets even if West Ham do come calling

Keep up to date
