Good Luck Robert Green and Chris Hussey

BIG time sport demands a great deal of mental strength from those who play it. After his error against the USA Robert Green is going to need it to play on for England.

He'll also need the support of his fellow players and the manager. Thankfully one thing Coventry City didn't suffer from last season was goalkeeper howlers, quite the opposite infact.

Even so that Coventry City legend Steve Ogrizovic when he watches his Cup Final tape will wince at that famous slip up that nearly let Clive Allen in to score.

But his memories of that game will be hugely positive. I do recall a couple of defenders performances that gave me nightmares at the time though

Famously Steve Walsh on a short loan spell with us hardly shone and wasn't seen again. Some of Leon Barnett's performances in his recent loan spell led many of us to question Chris Coleman's faith in him.

One that stands out is Adam Virgo in Micky Adam's time. He was withdrawn at half time in a home game after a dreadfully bad first half performance

Managers have to be psychologists however and generally try to not ruin the confidence of the players under thier control. Fabio Capello resisted a half time substitution and Green seemed to raise himself to the challenge

One City player who I hope proves himself next season is Chris Hussey. The manager proclaimed him as the best left back in non league football. Then starved him of first team action for long periods

It seemed he was prepared to play anybody in the position except Chris. This also meant putting in players out of position to fill the role

I don't know what that did to the players confidence but I can imagine. Then to play him in an awful team performance against Reading and sub him at half time seemed like twisting the knife.

All of the team were responsible and I believe Chris should have had an opportunity to redeem something from a match that was realistically already lost.

So here's a challenge for Aidy when he meets the players. Hopefully with his good record of working with young players he can inspire Chris Hussey to better things.

And hopefully Robert Green can show his true worth against Algeria on Friday

Tell you what Kev,it's okay Green showing mental strength after the game the other night, but if he showed more mental concentration during the game, he may well have not let a soft shot slip through his butter fingers.Watching England is as stressful as watching the Sky Blues !
