Three Great Wingers From Coventry City's Past
JOHN SILLETT said recently he wants to see the City play more attacking football and use wingers all the time too.
Our new manager Aidy Boothroyd has been talking in a similar way, he says he wants his new team to be entertaining, so all the talk of him liking the long ball route seems to be at odds to what he's intending to bring to his new football club.
Sillett talking about wingers got me thinking about three great wingers we've had here at Coventry City namely, Willie Humphries, Ronnie Rees, and Tommy Hutchison.
Only fans of a certain age will have seen these in action, especially Humphries and Rees, but they were gifted players and exciting to watch.
Willie Humphries an Irishman was only small in stature but playing wide out on the right, he would effortlessly beat his marker and deliver pinpoint crosses which the centre forward would gratefully lap up.
On the other flank was our very own Welsh Wizard Ronnie Rees, and just like Willie he would relish taking on the defender or in his case defenders, skin them and then whip over accurate crosses.
He liked to cut inside and score goals himself and he could play on either wings too so a good all round player.
I was a winger myself for Caludon Castle School and Coventry Boys, and they both inspired me with my own wing play,so I would play on a Saturday morning and then go to Highfield Road in the afternoon to watch them play, great days.
Then later on came Tommy Hutchison, he became a Sky Blue legend,he was such a crowd pleaser an entertainer, but a great footballer too.
Yes it's all in the past a nostalgic trip down memory lane, but these three had the lot, skill, trickery, strength, and the key one, they could cross the ball accurately most of the time.
Any young fans should ask their older relations what Humphries, Rees, and Hutchison were like, no they weren't a firm of Coventry Solicitors, just three very good wingers .

No mention of NORMAN LOCKHART, PLUM WARNER OR GEORGE EDWARDS?
Frank,my late father used to take me to Highfield Road as a kid, and he always talked about players from his era,and Plum Warner was one he talked about a lot.
The City have had some very good players over the years, but the three I mentioned were ones that stood out for me, my son's favourite is Huckerby.
Every fan from every era has their favourites, but Humphries and Rees are mine.
