The Aidy Boothroyd In-Tray

OUR new manager began work today with a lot of challenges to face. His first task is to meet his staff and begin the process of lifting the whole club

It's not clear how much contact he'll have with the playing staff before pre season training but if there's one mobile number he could do with calling it's Keiren Westwood's

One of the lasting images of the dreadful performance against Watford was our keeper kicking in the advertising hoardings in frustration.

He needs to be convinced by the project to sign on for an contract extension. Im sure that's possible

The players who are out of contract have to be a big consideration. Aidy has a good record of giving youth a chance. So surely he must decide to give Jordan Clarke his chance next season and not renew Stephen Wright's contract

Clinton Morrison has not proved to be the prolific scorer we need. I am not convinced he is always a great team player. But to dispense with his services would leave us with only Freddy Eastwood upfront. I'm sure this is under active consideration

In goal Danny Ireland may deserve to be raised to second choice keeper. Dimi deserves the chance to find a proper place elsewhere

In the medium term the team needs strengthening when the transfer window opens. It seems clear with money spent on paying off one manager and recruiting another, the transfer pot won't be huge

But we need a left back. Chris Hussey who'se confidence was ruined by the last manager could be the first choice we need. But with the release of Marcus Hall we need a second option in the role

if the resources are as small as I fear I believe most of it should be concentrated on buying a twenty goal a season striker. Up to two extra strikers could be recruited from players released from thier clubs at the end of the season

But we do need to spend decent money on a dependable lead striker. We are linked with James Beattie and that's the calibre of the player required but it's any one's guess if the budget will stretch to it

Finally In our longer term interest I am convinced to provide this fine group of young players the proper chance to develop we need to reinstate a regularly competing reserve team

Since 1967 - according to Wikipedia - City have only twice had a 20+ goals-in-a-season striker: Ian Wallace in 77/78 and Dion Dublin in 97/98. But it's not just about the striker, it's about the team around him. I think Eastwood could be a potential 20+ man with the right players around him.

We need a quality striker, but as Ian rightly says it's having players in the team that can create etc.
look at Blackpool, no big name players there, but just a never say die attitude, they play to their strengths, which is every player doing his bit.
The team we had in 87 that won the cup was very similar,no big time stars, but they would never give in,okay it was the Cup and not the league, but the steely determination was there.
Saying that it would be great if we could get in a couple of Premier League players, just to add to the squad !
