Newcastle Save Best 'Til Last
SO THE WILL HE/WONT HE SAGA that's been at the forefront of every City fan's mind throughout January has finally ended, albeit with the unfortunate departure of a very talented player. Although nobody wanted to see anyone leave during this month's window, being the pessimist I am, I was resigned to losing at least one of our "big name" players.
With his contract up in the summer, Best's departure was always on the cards. His body language over the past few months suggested that he was getting cold feet at the Ricoh.

Add this to his generally nonchalant playing style (like a Nottingham-born Berbatov), and you get plenty of ammunition for the boo-boys. It's a shame that his last appearance for the club ended as it did, and i believe it's fair to say that he wont look back on his time as a Sky Blue very fondly. He was never given the full support of the fans, and it pains me to think that if he was viewed more favourably amongst the supporters that he might still be a Coventry player.
Overall, I'd view the January transfer window as a success. At the time of writing, we've succeeded in hanging on to Westwood and Gunnarsson, and have strengthened the squad with the additions of Deegan, Baker, Wood and Hussey. There's no doubt in my mind that Chris Coleman and Ray Ranson are working tirelessly to try and secure a replacement for Best, and in the next few hours all may become a little clearer.
It's important to remember that loan transfers can still go through after today, and it's quite possible that City may take advantage of this. The fact that Jack Cork has today joined Burnley on loan manifests the progress he made during his time with us. This can hopefully work in Ray Ranson's favour as he aims to persuade managers that Coventry is the right place to send their promising youngsters.
So, as it stands, we've lost Besty. However, I'm quietly confident that with a little luck we can secure the signing of a striker in the next few hours. I, like numerous football fans across the country, will be glued to Sky Sports News until the Window slams shut this evening.

"...we were never going to panic on the last day of the transfer window with the knowledge that the loan market is open to us again next week"
sounds like Ranson already has an idea of the players he is hoping to bring in. how much say do you think Coleman has in the matter of which players to sign?
Ranson seems to have final say on which players he thinks are financially viable for the squad, but dont you think it should ultimately Coleman who has the knowledge on whether and how much a player is worth, and also how much they can bring to the squad...
