Leon Best, the Best deal for Coventry?
LEON Best joins Newcastle for yet another undisclosed fee, from a business point of view, I agree with Monsieur Ranson that it is a good bit of business, since one assumes that he will have attained and negotiated in earnest for a fee that is greater than that we would have received had the tribunal route been followed in the summer.
Best had made it clear he would not be staying around much longer, given his apathy over signing a new contract, so to leave is perhaps the right choice all round. I never condone the small fraction of City fans that choose to boo our players, but I do feel that Leon Best's body language was one, prior to the booing, of a man who wanted away, so for that reason, amongst many others, this is the right move.
No club should have an individual playing for them whose heart isn't with it, fact!
My concern is that given that most fans and clearly key personnel at the Ricoh knew this exit, which has been well publicised, was on the cards from the outset in January, the cynic in me now worries that the funds from this sale will not be useable in this transfer window, because it has happened too late for any effective deals to be now undertaken, so as stated in the telegraph, loans is the answer to our prayers?
Really? No replacement/investment was actually the answer, since when the summer comes the proceeds of this sale will have been conveniently forgotten and we will be left asking the question where did that money go to? Answer, propping up the other poorly performing section of the Sky Blues Empire of late, our profit and loss account, Simples!
This "sell and cover our losses" tactic, however financially prudent, can't go on much longer for a number of reasons, yes fans will get more unsettled but even more than disconcerting that this, mainly because we are now down to the bare bones of quality and once Westwood leaves in the summer, who will we sell this time next year to cover our losses from 2011/2012? Coleman... I don't think so!
