Is James McPake's return the salvation of Coventry City?
IT MIGHT be coincidence but since James McPake returned to the side, City have won 5, drawn 3 and lost only 1 out of 9 Championship games. During those games, City have conceded only 6 goals, three of those coming in the Ipswich game.
Having watched a number of those games, I think his no-nonsense style of defending and solid partnership formed with the impressive Richard Wood is a key reason for this impressive return.
Add this to the best goalkeeper in the Championship and some strong performances from both Wright and Cranie and City look solid at the back.
At the start of the season, our central defensive partnership was a cause for concern.
With Turner and Ward we had inconsistent defenders with the makeshift options of Cranie, Wright and Hall. McPake had made a couple of appearances the previous season but it was too little to make any real judgement on his ability.
Chris Coleman was always extolling the virtues of James McPake as a defender. This faith must have come as a great comfort to McPake during the long weeks and months out injured.
Based on performances since his return, we fully understand why Coleman rates him so highly as a defender. It looks like Chris Coleman has unearthed a gem!

I feel that James McPake's impact on the Sky Blues side compares favourably with that of Roy Barry in 1969 when his uncompromising displays had led City to qualify for Europe.
