Where's the history gone?

ON Tuesday night we face a premiership team in crisis. The way football is the temptation to enjoy Portsmouth's difficulties, and hope they'll give us a chance to progress in the Cup is the first reaction

The reality is a famous name in English football are on the brink of going into administration. When I recall the financial boost City got from winning the FA Cup it seems unbelievable that two years after thier cup victory Portsmouth have reached this state

City fans cheekily sang "where's your wages gone" during the first match. After the Portsmouth fans shouted at thier board "where's the money gone"

You may as well ask of football in general "wheres the history gone". Clubs who were historically owned by local businessmen with a stake in the local community, now compete to catch the attention of the latest foriegn billionaire

Portsmouth went down that route.Starting with the Russian variety and moving on to Arab money. And at the end of the day to no money at all.

This is because both in the higher league and the Championship money talks. Since the explosion of Sky TV money into the game the rich have got richer. The not so rich have taken financial risks to catch up

Coventry City were under the control of local business men like Derrick and Peter Robins in thier golden years. Then the likes of John Poynton,Mike Mcginnity and Bryan Richardson. With varying degrees of success it must be admitted

Now they are under the control of an anonymous venture capitalist group. It must be said significant resources have been put in. There's no suggestion of a Portsmouth style debacle here. But obviously fans question if SISU are commited in the long term, and what comes after

Football has changed a lot from our FA Cup win to Portsmouth's. But at the end of the day I still love going down to the Ricoh to watch a game. Hope all the Portsmouth fans get the club they love secured soon
