Reality Check
Our FA cup opponents, 2008 FA Cup winners Portsmouth are in a sorry state. An estimated £ 60 Million in debt, facing a winding up order from HMRC, unable to pay their players and their fans in open revolt.
Yet they are a Premier League Club with TV income of around £30 Million per season plus all the additional revenues associated with membership of the Premiership.
So how did they get into this position, simple they used the tried and trusted method of buying expensive players, paying them big wages and totally living outside their budget. Sounds familiar doesn't it.
David Sullivan, the former owner of Birmingham City, commented that he would not be surprised if a Premiership club goes to wall soon. Indeed he also commented that there are a number of Championship Clubs teetering on the brink.
We all want to see our clubs doing well but at what price?
One thing that always amazes me is that the majority of football clubs are not run as businesses. Standard business rules seem to go out of the window where football clubs are concerned.
When a chairman tries to run a club like a business, certain sections of the fans lambaste them for a lack of ambition. All they want is big signing now regardless of the financial implications and long term damage to the club.
We have a chairman now who is running the club the 'right way' and attracting criticism in certain quarters as a result.
At least we know, unlike Portsmouth fans, that Coventry City will be here tomorrow and for the foreseeable future thanks to pragmatic business management.
