Hurrah for the Cup!
Christmas is drifting to its end for another year. It's sad really, like dancing to that slow, drunken, sentiment-inducing number that the DJ spins before the lights come back up and we all meander homewards back to our well-lit, but less exciting lives.
But wait, we haven't reached that point just yet. There's still the enticing Yuletide denouement that is the FA Cup third round!
Portsmouth away doesn't exactly conjure the pure essence of cup romanticism, but it will do. A win would still be quite a scalp for our boys, even though their opponents seem to have imported the financial perils of their previous owners' homeland (Dubai, that is).
There might be a few fellows who would regard a good cup run as a danger given what happened last season when we did so well in the thing that we forgot there was a league to do as well. Piffle, I would say to those people. The cup is beautiful, magical thing that can add a sparkle to even the most drab of seasons.
I'm sure Chris Coleman and his team will be all too wary of how poor we were after last season's dalliance with Chelsea. It was a bit like going to an interview for a big important job in a brand new tailored suit and shiny shoes, and the next day turning up to your usual crap job without any trousers on at all... and then not getting the good job... and then getting a written warning from HR about indecent exposure. We've all been there.
No, Coleman won't let that happen again. And so what if he does? I love a good cup run, and it's not like we're setting the league alight this season. A good cup run might be the only thing to smile about come May. Even if we get relegated, does it make all that much difference? It hasn't done Leicester much harm.
