City's Goalkeeping Greats
KEIREN WESTWOOD was my choice for Player of the Year last season. Looking at how close we were to relegation it's clear that his excellent displays made a crucial difference.
He's been one of a long line of great City keepers. Reg Matthews played for England in the 50's,and Bill Glazier nearly did in the 60's. In a golden period we had two top class keepers Jim Blyth and Les Sealey competing for the shirt.
Steve Ogrizovic is an absolute legend from his spell in goal for the club. And not that long ago we fielded Swedish International Magnus Hedman.
I believe Westwood compares favourably with all of these greats. In my opinion you look for certain qualities in a keeper.
He should be a great shot stopper. He should also command his area. That not only gives confidence to the defenders in front of him,but intimidates forwards attacking him.
His clean sheet record shows what confidence he inspires in his defence. It's hard to remember many times he's lost one on ones with forwards.
Dimi like our first choice keeper is an agile shot stopper. His second half performance against Portsmouth showed that. But his spell in the team early on in the season shows hes not so good at commanding his area.
So if we lose Westwood in the window it will be hard to replace him. Let's hope it doesn't happen.
Goalkeepers know one mistake can cost a match,so really they are judged on how few mistakes they make. I enjoyed watching Peter Shilton at his peak for his sheer consistency. He hardly ever made a mistake.
Probably the most commanding in the area, and the one who really intimidated forwards was Peter Schmeichel in his Manchester United days.
It would be good to see Westwood develop as another City Goalkeeping Great. Only time will tell if its possible.
