Blame the fans

I KEEP hearing a recurring theme that blames the fans for lack of support? Its true, support can make a big difference. But these are tougher times than ever for us fans both financially and the expectations we have of the club.

I wound venture it's the hype and unrealistic spin that the fans have been given in recent years that have promoted apathy and resulted in criticism.

Scunthorpe's manager said after the City game their realistic objective is to stay in the league and that's what their fans are looking for.

We're sold an line of investment strengthening the squad, play-offs and promotion to the league where rightfully belong. To coin a seasonal phrase... I say HUMBUG!

You wouldn't keep going to a garage to fix your car, be overcharged and have more wrong with your motor than when you took it in especially when they promised to do otherwise. You wouldn't keep going there to be loyal. You wouldn't tell friends and family to go and get some of the same. Football as fans are realising, it's the same as.

All teams can't be winners, but all teams should be triers and I think that's were the folly lies. Gunnarson is a good example. His heart and sole were in the game last season and for whatever reason its not translated to this year.

Is it reasonable to ask someone to pay their hard earned and blindly follow a team that just don't look bothered or up for it? I don't think so.

Coventry fans want to support their team. We do. How many came out for the Chelsea game. How many more wanted tickets. People queued for hours around the stadium. Fans know their team may not always win, may not get promotion, may not play the beautiful game, but they want a team of triers that give all they have for the team and for the fans. Something to cheer about.

Let the fans see this and the Ricoh will be house the loudest supporters in the country. I'm not saying we all have big gobs but we are a City that has great passion and all it takes is a small spark to ignite. In the meantime I say to those that are critical of the support, don't blame the fans.

The people of Coventry have to take some of the blame. Your support for Coventry should be unconditional no matter what situation or league we find ourselves in. Coventry's biggest revenue stream must be from the gate receipt so the fans have a direct affect on the money the club have to spend. We don't have a rich sugar daddy to rely on who can just poor millions into the club.

Your right - in this league the fans do provide a large amount of the money the club generates.

Your wrong (I reckon) - Support should not be unconditional. No club has the right to expect people to turn up out of loyalty. It happens nowhere else and footie is no exception.

I'll support CCFC in the cold and rain and pay the ticket price if they do there bit and try and do the best they can. Play with passion, heart and sole and I'll cheer them on, win, lose or draw.

Don't expect it as a given though, my support depends on the team doing their bit.

To blame the fans is a nonsense in my opinion. There are 13 clubs in this league with average gates lower than us (some by a considerable distance) and yet most of them are above us. If attendances are so important, then it is perfectly reasonable to ask why the likes of Preston outperform us year after year.

And we should not forget, the best supported club in the league last year were relegated. We still average 17K, and do this despite high prices, during a severe recession, and on the back of some awful seasons on the pitch (not to mention the 40 years since the last top 6 finish). I'm prety amazed we still get that many to be honest.

And anyway, an extra couple of thousand every week would equate to a few hundred thousand pounds at the end of the season - handy for sure - but to put it in perspective is about what we used to pay Kevin Kyle in wages, or to put it another way, less than what we made from the fa cup last season (something that would not have been budgeted for).

well said craig,
i am sick and tired of people blaming lack of support for our constant failure,
burnley,preston, blackpool . scunthorpe,
doncaster, all above us, all with much lower gates.
the reason burnley went up is cos they dont sell their best players- how can we expect best and westwood to stay when we sell good players and hence are always near the bottom.
funny no one EVER comes in for wright, hall, osbourne, turner, all players coleman raves about- there is a message there!!!!!
