Managers and the Media

THESE days football managers are also media personalities. The feature of TV coverage is the manager's after match interview

The trouble managers have with this is the two audiences they have to work with. They need to balance been honest and truthfull with the fans, whilst making sure the players arent demotivated by criticism from the boss

When he first came to Coventry Chris Coleman was very frank and honest on those occasions and endeared himself to the fans because of it.

But as time's gone on the defences have gone up and the views have changed. Too often he looks for the positives and practically disregards any negatives

Off course slagging off players in public doesnt always achieve anything. Most managers say criticism should stay in the dressing room. But if its totally sidetracked the manager loses credibility

We have had at least two after match closed door team meetings if i recall this season. After a truly awfull performance if fans know about these at least they know the manager is as concerned as they are

Im not saying its easy, who'd be a manager these days. However a decent balance does need to be struck

And sometimes no pre match statement could be better. Chris called the Derby game a "must win" and the Palace match a "Cup Final". It's hard to see how he can hype up the QPR game even more

Like most fans Im hungry for news in every days Telegraph. But maybe the pressure to fill the paper can be counter productive.

The potential Sam Vokes transfer was trumpeted in the Telegraph and never happened.Though of course the just as reported Richard Wood one did

This week we've had Chris saying how much we need Sammy Clingan back and how hes planning for the possibility of Best and Westwood leaving.

Is this just refreshing honesty which we fans know really. Or is it undermining other midfield players in the squad and telling those two we arent as commited to keeping them as the club says

What do people think ?
