What a difference a half makes
At half time against Middlesbrough, I turned to my pal in the stands and warned: 'We could be in for a hiding here.'
At two-nil down with little to show for the past forty-five minutes, I feared I'd be watching the second through my fingers, like when I have to watch Brucie stumble through another embarrassing Strictly episode.
My mind could already see the message boards awash with apocalyptic cries, and my Coventry supporting friends giving me those consolatory grins, which tell me I shouldn't have expected more from my poor old team.
I imagined the CWR phone-in, populated at the best of times by the kind of people that could find fault with a snowflake. I expected Geoff would be talking a few back off bridges and balconies, telling them it's not worth it, there's always ice hockey.
Those Coleman naysayers out there often point to his procrastination in making substitutions, or complete inability to change tactics, as their main arsenal of opposition against him. At half time they must have been licking their lips.
But lo and behold: changes at half time. Two substitutions; a new formation; a renewed attitude; a will to scrap for anything we could get out of this game. Is that not what we've all been asking for?
At half time on Saturday I would've thought I'd have more chance of winning a grand in 'Kick for Cash', than seeing City get a point that day. Let's make no bones about it, our second half recovery was very impressive, and the players and manager should feel all happy and warm inside about it.
After the game I put the CWR phone-in on to listen to all the happy Sky Blues fans basking in their team's canny point-grabbing, show-stealing, matching-one-of-the-best-teams-in-the-league performance. All I heard was some bloke complaining about tickets.
It's nice to know that some things just never change.
