Can Chris Coleman manage?
FOR a long time it's been taboo among City fans to question Chris Coleman.
Most of us realise that changing the manager so often achieves nothing. For all that we are free to review his progress.
I look for three abilities in a manager. Tactical knowledge, transfer dealing, and the ability to motivate players.
Here are my thoughts on all three...
Tactical Knowledge
When he replaced Dowie the season before last he clearly saved us from relegation.
The 4-5-1 system he played utilised our midfield strengths, and catered for our shortage of quality strikers. Unlike at present we created a number of chances.
Despite the players almost blowing it in the Charlton game, things looked positive.
He's shown a willingness to change tactics to fit situations since, and used substitutes in a timely way.
Transfers Dealings
By and large these have been good.
The Dann and Fox signings were inspired. Gunnarson and Westwood were also great additions to the squad. Others including Chairman Ranson and Chief Scout Thorn may have had an input but the Manager would have had final approval.
The Eastwood signing has so far been a failure. But few fans thought that at the time and most supported the move
Motivating Players
All of the squad speak out in support of him.But their performances show something different. That terrible Charlton display almost unravelled his work to keep us up in the first season.
Last season besides a month that brought wins against Birmingham and Wolves, was full of inept performances and rages ansd apologies from the manager. This season is similar. Why should this be so ?
Coleman is a young manager with a decent reputation in the game, and should be stuck with. But there does appear to be a problem with motivation. This squad as with previous ones should do better.
They remind me of England under Steve McLaren. A side capable of achieving better, but under performing when it really matters. Does any one have Fabio Capello's number and does he do advice clinics?
