Don't Worry... we're strong!
I ARRIVED home late last night after witnessing another abject performance from the Sky Blues at Blackpool. Woeful in every sense, it was one of those days when I start to question why I bother.
I was badly in need of a lift by the time I arrived back and thankfully Chris Coleman was on hand via the back page of The Telegraph to provide the perfect pick-me-up.
His comments on the excellent mental strength of the current squad served to reassure me that what I'd seen earlier at Bloomfield Road was not a limp capitulation against a mediocre side, that the side wasn't in fact short of leaders or any sort of inspiration, that we weren't in fact totally clueless managing our first worthwhile effort on goal when we were already 3 goals down and that there were any number of players out there who were able to take the game by the "scruff of the neck" and make some sort of impact.
Admirer of Chris Coleman as I am I think his comments were ill-judged. We, the supporters are not fools. We judge on what we see, not what we're told.
The side showed their lack of mental strength on far too many occasions last season and if it's going to be different this time round then we'll have to hope the Blackpool debacle was a blip, just like Swansea the previous week.
Rather than regaling the assembled press with such gems as this latest one I think Coleman's time would be better spent in the company of Mr Ranson over the next 48 hours or so working against the clock to try and address the areas in which we are so lacking, namely a decent striker and a creative midfielder.
If the deadline comes and goes on Tuesday with no further activity I think we really are going to need that famous "Mental Strength" to get us through the season.
