Jay Tabb talk is music to ears

INTERVIEWING Coventry City's Jay Tabb last week was a refreshing change.

Bring me a stereotypical footballer and I can guarantee the only thing he would have in common with Tabb is that they both earn a living from kicking a ball around a field.

You'd never catch him boasting about his WAG, showing off the new piece of bling around his neck or turning up the latest Taio Cruz album in his flash sports car.

No - head to the nearest mosh pit at some sweaty gig venue heaving with students and you're likely to see Tabb bouncing around in the middle.

Wearing skinny jeans, a The Who t-shirt and his new pair of winklepickers, Tabb spoke of his disappointment at not being able to attend his favourite midweek gigs because the tickets sell out straight away.

Sold out?

Usually you would think that the phrase wouldn't exist in a loaded footballers' vocabulary and instead they would barge their way to the front of the queue shouting 'do you know who I am?'.

His piano-playing past-time is well-known, while the recent revelation that he plans to retire when he is 30 because there's more to life than football, shows he hasn't become wrapped up in mega-rich, superstardom.

Apart from bucking the dressing-room trend with his love of indie music, Tabb stands out as a genuinely nice guy who is happy to give anyone the time of day and an eloquent interviewee as well.

Too right.

Jay Tabb is my favourite City player because he's a great role model. His honest workman-like performances are admirable and I've heard some great things about him off the pitch too.
A mate of mine met him in a bar one night and rather drunkenly sang some city songs to him. He said Tabby was more than happy to chat to him about footy, music etc though and they ended up chatting for an hour! Apparently he spent most of the time complimenting other members of the squad and putting himself down.
I also seem to remember reading a peice about Tabb written by a brentford fan when he first joined us. He had a terminally ill daughter who was also a Bees fan and tabby was her favourite player. On hearing about this, Tabb visited her as frequently as he could in her last few weeks and would sit and talk to her for hours on end.

An honest and genuinely nice guy. And a great taste in music to boot!
