Michael Mifsud set to return for Aldershot clash
UNSETTLED Coventry City striker Michael Mifsud will be thrown into the fray and the Sky Blues' attack for tonight's Carling Cup tie against Aldershot with manager Chris Coleman juggling an injury nightmare.
The Maltese international has been called upon despite the fact just a fortnight ago he was bound for Bristol City in a ã1.5âÂÂmillion move. That transfer fell through at the final hurdle and Mifsud will now come in to bolster a squad struggling without injured forwards Leon Best, Jay Tabb, Leon McKenzie and Kevin Thornton.
Mifsud will play on the left with Robbie Simpson on the right of a four-man attack that also includes summer recruits Clinton Morrison and Freddy Eastwood.
And young goalkeeper Danny Ireland will make his competitive debut because Kieren Westwood has picked up a minor injury in training and veteran Andy Marshall is not match-fit.
Coleman was forced to take drastic measures with winger Julian Gray also nursing an injury but conceded at least the problems gave him a chance to test the quality and depth of his squad.
He said: "We want competition for places because that's the only way forward for us but this is forced by injury. We've got a smaller squad this season but it is a stronger squad."
Tabb was replaced at half time in Saturday's 2-0 Championship victory opener over Norwich City after being crudely chopped down on the edge of the penalty area by Norwich defender Dejan Stefanovic.
Coleman said: "He was perhaps lucky not to get a red card for that. Jay took a knock on his knee but hopefully it won't keep him out for too long."
